Reader's Guide:
This week, we’ll move with Israel from the banks of the
Red Sea (Monday’s reading) all the way to Mt. Sinai, where they will prepare themselves to listen to the voice of God.
This is an important phase of their journey with God. They will again show their true colors as they complain against Moses about the lack of water (Tues. and Wed. readings) and break God’s simple commands about manna (Tues. reading). But they will also see more of God’s true colors: his grace and provision for them as he gives water in unexpected ways twice, provides food from the skies, and sends them a non-Israelite with leadership advice to make their society better (Thurs. reading).
And of course, all of this week’s readings are leading up to Sinai and the giving of God’s great and righteous law to set them apart from other peoples. They’re on a journey with God, and even though they aren’t good a lot of the time, he always is!
